In stockTime to replace your door knobs
A knob is a classic piece of hardware installed on doors either to open them (in the case of interior doors) or to push them (in the case of entrance doors). Nowadays, the knob for an entrance door or street door is a fixed piece of hardware that is common to see and install. It continues to fulfill its function, although it is true that sometimes large handles are also chosen for entrance doors for aesthetic reasons.Differences between a knob and a handle
On the other hand, rotating knobs have remained a type of replacement hardware. Currently, handles are installed on interior doors and passageway doors, and when the door needs to be locked, these are installed along with a privacy lock or thumbturn. In contrast, knobs are more sophisticated hardware that include a mechanism inside, whether it be a locking mechanism with a privacy lock, a key, or free passage.Knobs are usually installed with tubular latches (although any latch would work for their operation), which often come included in the pack. They have a round or oval shape and a 65mm diameter rosette, which is why when you want to replace a knob with a handle, you must look for a handle that has a larger than usual diameter (handles generally have a 50mm diameter). Its function remains the same: turn it to actuate the latch and open the door.
The 3 existing types of knobs
As we have already mentioned above, there are 3 types of knobs: knobs for free-passage doors, privacy knobs with a thumbturn for bathroom doors, and knobs with a key option to restrict access.Free-passage knobs are knobs whose function is literally exactly the same as a handle. Turn it to open the door. As we have already said, the rosette is 65mm, and therefore the hole you make in the door must also be larger. In addition, knobs are not installed with wood screws; instead, you will use through-bolts to join one to the other, thus pressing the door.
Knobs with a privacy mechanism are an optimal solution for bathrooms. Just as you currently need a unified latch, a privacy lock, and a set of handles, a knob mechanism with a thumbturn would allow you to carry out a proper installation on your WC doors. On the inside, there is the classic button to lock the rotation of the knob, and on the outside, there will be an emergency unlocking device that will allow you to unlock the mechanism so that you can enter from the outside if someone gets locked in the bathroom.
Finally, there is the knob with a key. This simply has a locking operation similar to that of a privacy lock, but instead of having a button, it is locked and unlocked by means of a key. Naturally, on the inside of the door, there is a button so that if you are locked in, you can open the door.
